I’m not going to lie when I say that designing a website is
mind numbingly fun for me. I originally went to college to become a web
designer, but realized that I had potential in doing so much more than that. I
was nice to get back to the roots of my knowledge though. It took some time to
brush of all the dust build-up on my scripting for HTML and CSS3, but it
started coming back as I went through the website (though I don’t think I am
close to what I use to be able to do).
How does a website promote me?
Well the easiest way to answer is that it is a visual
illustration of my work and me. It can represent me as a person and then the
work that I have done in the past. Unlike social media, the website has to
define you, not only by the content, but how visually pleasing it is. You have
make people want to come back to your site frequently and to know that this is
your work and your abilities. Social media sites are fleeting in natures; one
day a site is popular, then another will come along and take over (look at what
Facebook did to MySpace).
- There are advantages to social media to your webpage though.
- · They can link together, so they can see your website work and then jump to Facebook or Twitter for up to date information on you.
- · There is the ability to promote your website with social media
- · It is an excellent way to show someone your ability to run a website and social media.
- · Really, the possibilities are endless.
How was designing my website?
Like I stated at the beginning; I’ve missed working on web
design. There was a mixture of dread, because I was looking forward to make an
entire site in two weeks and there was so little creativity left in my brain
after this daunting semester. I manage to push through though and used a very
basic layout for my website, but simplicity can also be very appealing to many
people.
I am thankful for having Dreamweaver on my laptop too.
Dreamweaver is a excellent program to use, when it comes to making a website,
but it can still be tricky at times. I’ve used Dreamweaver in the passed
designing multiple websites, so my background was helpful in making this
project as easy as possible. If I didn’t
have the program on my laptop, I feel that I would have be extremely frustrated
with the limited about of time that class offered, because this is a time
consuming project.
Like I stated earlier, I used a simple design, so to keep
things organized and easy tom maneuver through the site. I started with a
header, which was a time-laps photo of myself, which is also a link to my home page.
Then the menu bar that I made was simple links with the words to what they
were. There were four separate pages made for my website: home page, resume
page, portfolio page, and contact information page.
Home page is a basic description about myself. I wanted to
write something unique and would help me stand out as a individual.
My resume page is an image of my resume, which you can click
and it will download a .pdf file of my resume to your computer. It’s a great
way to show them your past jobs and also easy for them to get their hands on
this way.
The portfolio page took the most time to do. The top is a
slide show of a few pieces of work that I did in the field of photography.
Below the slide show are 1x1 images of the images of the slideshow, which link
to the higher resolution images for people to see. At the bottom of this page,
there are a few writing samples that I added from my public relations classes.
The contact information page was simple a site with all of
me personal information, incase someone was interested in hiring me.
Over all, the website project was fun for me. I enjoy
spending time looking at the complex scripting and coming up with unique ways
of solving problems that occur in web design. There is a calming feeling amongst
the frustration that I fide to be nice to have. I hope, in the future, to get
back into designing webpages. For now, I am quite happy that my final project
is finished and my brain isn’t buzzing as much.
